Jika pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di tingkat sekolah dasar lebih ditekankan pada pengenalan vocabulary, maka di SMP atau SLTP pengajaran Bahasa Inggris menggunakan pendekatan genre based learning atau lebih kepada jenis-jenis teks dalam Bahasa Inggris. Anak belajar voacabulary, tenses, grammar social function, generic structure melalui suatu teks.

Berikut adalah genre texts yang umumnya dipelajari untuk anak SLTP/MTs:
1. Narrative
Social function : To amuse, entertain ad to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different ways; this kind of text deals with problematic events which lead to crisis or tuning point of some kind, which in turn finds a resolution.
Generic structure : Orientation – Evaluation – Complication – Resolution – Re-orientation.
2. Description
Social function : to describe a particular person , place or thing.
Generic structure : Identification – Description.
3. Recount
Social fuction : To retell events for the purpose of informing or entertaining.
Generic structure : Orientation – Events – Re-orientation
4. Anecdote
Social function : To share with others an account of an unusual or amusing incident.
Generic structure : Abstract – orientation – crisis – reaction - coda
5. Procedure
Social function : To describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps.
Generic structure : Goal – materials – steps.
Di dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris melalui jenis teks umumnya memiliki 4 tahapan (The four stages in the teaching-learning process) seperti berikut ini :
